CULTURAL NOTE: The piazza is the main public space in an Italian town. Here people greet each other and linger with friends. A man reading a newspaper is just at home as two grandmothers catching up on what their sons are doing in Rome. Bordering the piazza might be an outdoor cafe and shops tucked under the arches of an arcade.
